Licences & Credits

When you tap a word in a Chinese or Japanese story, the English on its card draws on two open dictionaries maintained by the research community. This page credits them and links the licences they are published under.

CC-CEDICT is a Chinese–English dictionary published by MDBG, continuing the CEDICT project begun in 1997. It is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence (CC BY-SA 4.0). LingoTide uses a dated export of CC-CEDICT to write the English on Chinese word cards.

JMdict is a Japanese–multilingual dictionary from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (EDRDG), created by Jim Breen. It is used under the EDRDG licence, which applies the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence (CC BY-SA 4.0). LingoTide uses JMdict to write the English on Japanese word cards.

When a new word enters a course, its card is taken from the dictionary’s own definitions for that word, chosen for the sentence the word appears in. Where the dictionary has no usable entry for a word, the card is written by LingoTide.
